Week Two

To prepare for this week we were assigned to read excerpts from Snow Crash and an article about Luddite. Luddite now describes someone who is opposed to new technology. It originally was an organization of textile workers in the 19th century. They feared that the skills learned for their trade would go to waste as machines would replace their jobs. Many Luddites had shops closing due to factories being able to sell the same product for less. I found this reading really interesting because now our society is technologically dependent. I personally feel that in this day and age it would be hard to resist technology because everything we have and do is based on it.

This week we discussed the metaverse and to be completely honest I’m still confused about what it is. On the meta site, it says that it is a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection. I think it is a really cool concept but I cannot fully wrap my head around it. On Friday, we looked at tweets and movie clips to further discuss futuristic technolgy.

We also played on LambdaMoo which was pretty cool. At first, it was hard to figure out inputs to move around, it is a lot of trial and error. I was able to move around to different rooms and outside. Unlike some of my classmates, I never interacted with other players or characters.
